Jo blogs: Native Walkabouts

'Native Walkabout

'Native Walkabout

July 2010, Grand Canyon, Arizona.

With just a coulpe of days to go before the U.S Open at Huntington Beach, and little to no swell, it seemed only right that a skateboard mission be undertaken. With a brand new board from Rugged Roots to play around with, (when faced with this view), the car park seemed the safest option. Arizona is dry, very dry, so on the Tequila front, Silver Patron was in good supply throughout said mission. A few frozen Margaritas ‘Jo Style’ (as my heavy handed approach is now being called) kept the world smiling. Back in Newport, the Pro’s are in town and 54th street should be littered with them. Plenty of events to keep them all occupied and a recent ASP ratings climb by the incredible Jordy Smith means that this year, Kelly Slater’s epic run won’t be such a foregone conclusion. Last years U.S Open event saw the need for tow-ins during the finals – but with no swell as yet, that looks to be a one time only show. I shall be peddling myself and camera equipment to Huntington this week, looking forward to some interesting results! For more info on some rather nice boards made by an unlikely source check out www.rideruggedroots.com

Jo blogs: Wave Native goes Full Circle

Wave Native goes full circle

Wave Native goes full circle with Kiwi, Kristin Derr

July 2010, Newport Beach, California

This weekend brought an unexpected trip down to Encinitas, just north of San Diego. With a day of sailing in Mission Bay followed by goldfish racing – yes goldfish, at 2am in a local bar I decided that this was my kinda town. A lazy Sunday at Swami’s and Beacon’s was the perfect end. A heavy local spot but not too crowded compared to Newport, the swell was delivering some nice sets and my camera was burnt out by the end.

Wave Native had it’s own full circle moment when I met up with one local Kristin Derr, who informed me that her great grandfather was New Zealand All Black Jim Wylie. She had never seen the Haka and so with the help of an iphone we reconnected her to her roots and chucked her into a Wave Native tee for good measure. It was a beautiful moment and one that a certain Wave Native founder would have been stoked to see. http://stats.allblacks.com/asp/profile.asp?ABID=991

Running on Empty

Running on Empty

July 2010, Newport Beach, California.

So finally found my flip flops, boardies, bike and dignity at the house across the road, who knew? The swell that kicked in last week faded to 2ft chop but this means that it’s easier to just get in and swim, which is what I did, fully clothed after a run last night. And this was without any Tequila this time. Truly remarkable. Headed down to San Onofre at the weekend, rather like going back to California in the 60’s. Think Big Wednesday and you have it spot on. Baby waves, some hilarious moments of people trying to walk their boards back in over the stones, (one guy took half an hour over it and he was in ankle deep water the whole time). The swell should be picking up this weekend and have trip planned so will report back. For now while we wait for swell, this gem of a site may be of interest – www.globalquiver.com – a way for surfers to hire boards from other surfers around the world, saving on excess baggage costs and meaning that you may well have a quiver better suited to the break you are traveling to without the hassle of lugging your precious 9′1″ along for the ride.

Jo blogs: July Swell

July 2010, Newport Beach, California.

Sobered up from the 4th of July and finally made it to the Wedge, still can’t get over that wave. The rest of Newport Beach has seen seriously overcast skies (thank you Wave Native for the much needed sweatshirts) but a decent groundswell coming through. This is just a taster of what the week looked like and the quality of the locals. More to follow soon!

P.S Thanks to Tim for his very last minute guitar playing, (ran across the street as he was strumming in his living room and made him play into the lap top), if anyone has any copyright free music they would like me to use in these films then send in to Wave Native!
